Bates Cairns mark the trails of Acadia National Park and are iconic symbols named after Waldron Bates. As you hike the trails up mountains, you follow the cairns ensuring you are on the correct path. At the top of any mountain is a larger pile of stones symbolizing the peak. It is against park rules to move or alter the cairns in any way as this could result in the injury of a park visitor.
