Description
Lone Elk Park is a St. Louis County Park situated just off of I-44 near Valley Park, MO. Visitors to the park drive through (or even hike) the elk area and are treated to sightings of elk, white tail deer, wild turkey, and more! The drive extends through the bison area, as well, but visitors are not allowed outside their vehicles in this area.
On this morning, I arrived just as the sun was up and found the younger bull (right) standing alone alongside the road. The more mature bull (left) came out of the valley behind him and walked straight to the young bull. The "battle" seemed more like a father instructing a son on how to fight properly. What I like best about this photo, though, is that they are looking into each others' eyes.
This was taken from the safety of my car - and they were about 15 feet away, so zooming in with a 70-200mm lens allowed me to get closer than one should be during an event such as this. During the rut, visitors are discouraged from exiting their cars and there have been attacks on those walking too close to the elk.

I think that this is father/son. I think. There are 3 BIG bull elk in this park and this young one decided to square up against one of the big guys. It didn't last long.
