Artist's Description

Lone Elk Park, one of the St. Louis County Parks, sits alongside I-44 between St. Louis and Eureka, MO and is home to a small herd of elk. I was there in late September and the rut was on. This bull, antlers adorned with a tree branch, followed the cows into the water and bugled the entire time. It is such an eerie sound!

This shot was taken at about 7 p.m. in Elk Hollow. The elk, while wild, are not usually annoyed by the presence of people - although I've seen them charge people who were too close. Because of the rut, I didn't want to get too close to this bull as they are even more unpredictable during this time.
