Artist's Description

Lone Elk Park, one of the St. Louis County Parks, sits alongside I-44 between St. Louis and Eureka, MO and is home to a small herd of elk. I was there in late September and the rut was on. This bull, antlers adorned with a tree branch, followed the cows into the water and bugled the entire time. It is such an eerie sound!

This shot was taken at about 7 p.m. in Elk Hollow. The elk, while wild, are not usually annoyed by the presence of people - although I've seen them charge people who were too close. Because of the rut, I didn't want to get too close to this bull as they are even more unpredictable during this time.

Holly Ross

Self-taught photographer and Best of Missouri Hands Juried Artist, Holly Ross has explored a wide variety of subjects, but always returns to the more natural elements of our world. Another client described her work as, “visual poetry… emotions captured in ink and moments caught as if time could be glued to paper.” Holly’s intent is to seek out those more intimate ‘scapes’ and provide just a glimpse into a world,...
